Politics
There is no new reporting on the Kerch Bridge. There is, however, a good deal of reporting on the Kerch bridge that is dated “Today” and appears to be regurgitated reports from the first attack on the bridge in 2022 (October 8th, 2022), to include a series of video reports that recycle 4 year old images. Other reports repeat elements of the July and August 2023, and June 2025 attacks on the bridge.
Other than that, there does not appear to be any news on the bridge, which remains open.
On October 6th 20 illegal immigrants, escorted by armed, masked men, crossed into Latvia from Belarus, per Latvian ForMin Dombrava.
"The escorts of the illegal migrants, who were located on the Belarusian side, were armed, issued threats to (Latvian) soldiers, and also actively urged and drove the migrant group toward Latvia.”
"Several hours after this conflict, people dressed in masks entered Latvian territory, damaged a distribution cabinet, and stole cameras before the border guard's assignment could arrive, after which the individuals returned to Belarusian territory.”
The Russian strikes on October 6th hit one of the bridges over the Dnepr River in Zaporizhzhia. The bridge was temporarily closed, but is once again open to traffic. There are 6 bridges in Zaporizhzhia crossing the Dnepr but the specific bridge was not discussed in the reporting.
The Hungarian government informed the EU that it will continue to protect individuals who have military service obligations in Ukraine.
EU Spokesman Markus Lammert noted:
"Member states have the possibility to exert their discretion when it comes to applying the framework of the Council [of the EU] decision and the Temporary Protection Directive. This is provided for in Article 7 of the Temporary Protection Directive, and we were informed by Hungary in that regard that they are doing that.”
The EU has previously decided that:
”[T]emporary protection should in principle not be granted by the member states to newly arrived persons who are not authorised by the Ukrainian authorities to leave Ukraine in view of their military obligations.”
But Lammert commented:
"There are certain discretion for member states when implementing this, and this is where we are."
Ground Operations
Numbers on infiltrations, and attacks and counter-attacks remain high, there are some reports suggesting increases in uptempo on both sides, but there have been no confirmed changes along most of the line.
Some Ukrainian analysis suggests continued Russian incremental gains both around Kostiantinivka and between Kostiantinivka and Dobropillia (west of Kostiantinivka), and in the south, west of Hulyaipole (east and north-east of Orikhiv), but again this has not been confirmed.
In the south, imagery confirmed Ukrainian forces retain control of terrain south-east of Novoselivka (north-east of Orikhiv) which places them as a blocking force to slow Russian moves on the GLOC that runs northerly out of Orikhiv (the T0408 roadway).
Ukrainian positions were also confirmed near Novosandrivka (south-west of Orikhiv) as they were being attacked by Russian artillery. The fight continues to swirl around Orikhiv, but for now the Ukrainians are holding.
Air and Maritime Operations
Both sides continue the long-range drone / cruise missile strikes.
Both sides also continue the drone sniping across the front lines into the immediate rear (the vast majority less than 5 miles out). These attacks can involve from a handful to scores of FPV drones per day into any given village.
Ukrainian Forces
During the period October 5th-October 6th Ukrainian forces continued the strike campaign against Russian oil infrastructure, with strikes on the Volodyarskaya facility near Moscow.
During this period Russian forces claimed that Ukrainian forces launched nearly 1,000 strike drones into Russian airspace and Russian forces claimed they shot down more than 900 drones.
Civilian casualties included at least 2 killed and 9 wounded.
One span of Chonhar bridge onto northern Crimea has collapsed.
Imagery confirmed that during the night of October 3rd-October 4th Ukraine assets destroyed a SU-34 and SU-25 at Khanskaya Airbase, Adygea.
Ukrainian drone units are using drones to provide food and medicines to the residents of Oleshky, Kherson oblast (east of the Dnepr River).
The oil tanker AFRMAX RIO (Liberian flag, 810 feet, 107,000 DWT), is still burning about 15 miles south-west of Sochi, eastern Black Sea.
Russian Forces
During the period of October 6th-October 7th Russian forces launched at least several ballistic missiles, 6 x Zircon missiles, 48 x Kh-101 and Kalibr cruise missiles, and 130 x strike drones into Ukrainian airspace. The UAF shot down, or defeated with EW, 5 missiles, 39 cruise missiles, and 117 drones.
Damage was reported in Chernihiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Kirovohrad, Kyiv, Poltava, Sumy, Zaporizhzhia oblasts. Targets struck included power grid, logistics centers and road and rail related targets.
Civilian casualties included at least 15 killed and 62 wounded.
During the period of October 5th-October 6th Russian forces launched at least 137 x strike drones into Ukrainian airspace. The UAF shot down or defeated with EW 114 drones.
Damage was reported in Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Kherson, Odessa, and Zaporizhzhia oblasts. Targets struck included power grid, logistics centers and road and rail related targets. A bridge was struck in Zaporizhzhia.
Civilian casualties included at least 2 killed and 24 wounded.
Technology
Ukraine’s National Security Council commented today that interception rate for Russian jet-powered drones is improving:
"Special attention is being paid to countering jet drones, the use of which the enemy is escalating. Our defenses are also adapting. Last night, the success rate in countering such UAVs exceeded 82%: according to the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, 38 out of 46 jet-powered drones were shot down or neutralized.”
The UAF (responsible for air defense) reports that it has deployed an electronic warfare (EW) system, named “Lima,” that can intrude on the guidance systems of ballistic missiles and alter their flight path. During this past January they claim to have intruded on 2 ballistic missiles and caused them to strike the Dnepr River.
The system has also been used to intrude on the guidance system of a Kinzhal missile. The system continues to evolve as Russians have also continued to make changes to the their missiles in order to defeat the intrusion.
Earlier in the war Russian forces were using EW systems that intruded on the guidance of HIMARS rockets and Excalibur PGMs to such an extent that the weapons have been, for the most part removed from service by the Ukrainian army.
What is of note is that both these capabilities are not jamming the various guidance systems. Rather, they are intruding on the system and giving it false data, causing the rockets to change course. Interestingly, when Lima was used around Kyiv, people in Kyiv noted that their cell phones showed them to be in Peru.
Both Russian and Ukrainian EW systems are very good, and the Ukrainians claim a 190KM - 115nm - range. But clearly neither country has enough units to defend even their capital cities.

Thoughts
The ground war grinds on, and reportedly the Russians have increased their optemtpo (however that is being measured), but the amount of actual movement has dropped to nearly nothing. Two thoughts come to mind:
The first is that the Russian ground war is, with the exception of the dropping of glide bombs on Ukrainian positions within perhaps 30 miles of the front lines, disassociate with, and shows no seemingly no interest in the long range missile and drone strikes. Missiles may strike Kyiv, or they may not; the army keeps grinding.
And, as the leaves fall off the trees and reduce the overall amounts of concealment, movements will become slower and more deliberate and there will be fewer changes on the ground until winter weather both freezes the roads AND provides low clouds that reduce the effectiveness of surveillance and reconnaissance drones.
That said, it’s worth noting that the differences of opinion continue among various blogs, and between both sides, as to where the lines are. The Ukrainian army holds the lines are such and such, but there are several competent analytic efforts that hold the line is different, some in favor of Ukraine, some in favor of Russia. And there are clearly points on the map that it is fair to say that neither side actually knows where the line is, as the lines continue to broaden into a wide (sometimes 5 or 6 or 7 miles wide) patchwork of positions held by Russian and Ukrainian elements. And these elements continue to hold onto their positions no matter what.
Which leaves the war simply with this: the ground war will continue, like the Western Front in 1917. And in the wake of the renewed Russian attacks on Kyiv, and the plan for an increase in attacks this winter, President Zelenskyy has promised to escalate. President Putin will use those remarks to justify further escalation. This war began more than 5 years ago, arguably it began in 2014. Some Ukrainians suggest it began in 1663 (the Ruin). In any case, we are 5 months from the 5 year anniversary of major combat operations in the current chapter of the war and there is no end in sight.
